What a washing machine repair costs

Our labour charge is a fixed £75 for a freestanding machine and £85 for a built-in machine, including VAT. This covers the visit, finding the fault and the labour to repair it. Parts are charged on top, and we tell you the price of any part before we fit it. Most common repairs come to between £80 and £130 in total.

  • £75 fixed labour fee, plus parts
  • Usually repaired the same or next working day
  • Parts and labour guaranteed

£85Built-in washing machine. It has to come out of the kitchen unit.
  • The fixed fee covers coming out to you, finding the fault and the labour to fix it.
  • Parts are extra. We tell you which part it needs and what it costs before we fit anything.
  • All prices include VAT.
  • There is no call-out charge. The visit is included in the £75.
  • If the machine is not worth repairing, we will tell you before you spend anything on a part.

If the fault you describe on the phone sounds like a repair that would not make sense, we will tell you at the time rather than charge you for a visit. What you pay if we visit and the machine cannot or should not be repaired: to decide.

Not sure what yours will cost?

Ring us with the make and a description of the fault. In many cases we can tell you the likely fault and an approximate price, including the part, before we visit.

Common repair costs

The prices below are based on the cost of Hotpoint parts when we last checked. Other makes can cost more or less, so treat the totals as a guide. You will have the exact price for your machine before we fit anything. We have included a column that says whether we think a repair is usually worth doing. It is a rule of thumb for a machine under about eight years old.

Built-in machines are £85 labour rather than £75.

What makes a repair cost more

A built-in machine

The machine has to be removed from the kitchen unit before we can get to it, and refitted afterwards. The labour charge for a built-in machine is £85 rather than £75.

A sealed drum

On some newer machines the drum and the outer tub are one sealed unit. If the bearings fail on one of these, the whole drum assembly has to be replaced, which can cost more than the machine is worth. Give us a ring with the make and model and we can tell you whether yours is likely to be a sealed type.

A part that has to be ordered

We carry the most common parts. If a part has to be ordered from the manufacturer, we will tell you when it is due before we leave, and there is no second labour charge when we return to fit it.

A washer-dryer

The labour charge is the same. A washer-dryer has a drying circuit as well as a washing one, so there are more parts that can fail, and parts for the drying side are usually more expensive.

Worth checking before you book

Three things that can save you the cost of a repair.

  • If the machine is less than two years old, it is probably still covered by the manufacturer's guarantee, and an independent repair can invalidate that cover. Contact the manufacturer first.
  • Hotpoint and Indesit machines sold between October 2014 and February 2018 may be affected by the door-lock recall. If so, the repair is free from the manufacturer. Electrical Safety First's recall checker covers every make.
  • Each of our fault pages begins with the checks that are safe to do yourself. A blocked filter is the most common fault, and clearing it costs nothing.

Questions people ask

What is the most expensive part to replace on a washing machine?

The control board, at £85 to £324 for the part, followed by the motor at £81 to £163. On a sealed-drum machine a new drum and tub assembly costs £150 to £400 or more. Every other part on our list is under about £80. Because the control board is expensive and its symptoms overlap with cheaper faults, we test everything else first.

Is VAT included in your prices?

Yes. £75 and £85 are the prices you pay, and part prices are quoted including VAT.

Will you quote before starting?

Yes. The labour charge is fixed, and we tell you the price of any part before we fit it. If you decide not to go ahead at that point, that is fine.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No. The £75 covers the visit, finding the fault and the labour to repair it.

Should I just go to the manufacturer?

If the machine is still under guarantee, yes. Out of guarantee, the manufacturers' own one-off repairs start at over £100 and most guarantee the work for three months. Our charge is £75 plus the part, guaranteed for six months, and we can usually visit the same or next working day.
